Most heavily modified engines are difficult to start with a pull rope, so racers use external electrical hand starters to start their engines. That means the recoil is removed for the starter to be used. Rather than leaving an open gap, the flywheel fan cover replaces the recoil. This not only helps protect from large debris, but it also keeps in the air circulating created by the flywheel fan to cool the engine.
